I have the fondest memories of traipsing through the yard at my grandparents’ house when I was little. My dad would mow the lawn, and I would stand in awe underneath the oak tree, make up stories about fairies, and have imaginary conversations with the statues in the garden beds. It was a magical place—my very own “Secret Garden” in real life—and I’ve been trying to recreate that magic at my own property ever since.
All of those timeless garden and yard decorations are sadly gone now—sold along with the house—but I’m always looking for antique garden decor I know my grandma would approve of. That means picking through yard sales, popping into thrift stores, and even shopping vintage-inspired finds on the least likely of places: Amazon.

I’m convinced that the key to recreating an old, classic garden style that’s grandma-worthy is using iron urns as planters. With far more character than a plastic recreation or even a wooden planter could ever offer, this set of two is durably constructed; after all, they just don’t make things like they used to. Each urn is 21 inches tall and is made with weather-resistant iron, though you’ll have to drill in the drainage holes yourself. The antique-esque finish of these urns is realistic enough to make guests do a double take, and ask: Is this vintage? You’ll also love the spacious interior, which allows enough room for foliage, succulents, herbs, and even some trailing flowers like barcopa, ivy, sweet alyssum, or if you prefer an upright bloom, everyone’s favorite, foxglove.

This alloy steel three-piece bistro set is calling your name. It truly does look like something straight out of “The Secret Garden,” or maybe even “Pollyanna.” The set comes with an oval table and two chairs with a stenciled floral design that’s both pretty and nostalgic. Each piece is foldable, which makes them easier to store than your grandma’s wrought iron set from the ‘50s, and because it’s made of weather-resistant steel, you can also wipe it clean easily with water and a mild soap. It shouldn’t patina or rust over time, making it well worth the price.

The perfect hybrid of French country style and the grandma chic aesthetic, this wall-mounted planter is simply for decoration, but it looks like it could be a water fountain at a fantastical garden estate. It’s made of metal and has a distressed white finish that gives it an almost Parisian flair. Despite the French undertones, this vintage reproduction of, yes, a water fountain, works for a variety of garden aesthetics, including cottage, farmhouse, English, or shabby chic. Etched into the metal is “cultive dans le jardin”—that’s “cultivate in the garden” for non-French speakers—and the deep 10-inch basin is perfect for plants with shallow roots such as lavender or petunias, but also deeply rooted plants like milkweed, salvia, and most perennials.

Surely you’ve seen a yard or two with a deer (or two) statue sitting in the garden. Lore says it’s meant to attract deer into the yard—that is, real deer—but these painted concrete statues might have more symbolic significance given that some religions have recognized deer as a sign of purity or knowledge. While the mid-century vintage versions are typically made of concrete, this resin recreation of a mama deer and fawn looks much more lifelike with the realistic paint job and textured details.
